Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Medicine Department - ER - is the first stop for 130,000 patients and casualties referred to the hospital each year.  The department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Each day, approximately 350 people are treated from the entire Western Galilee region.  They undergo a registration process, triage, examination, stabilization of their condition, preliminary treatment, and referral for continued treatment at the hospital or in the community.  About one third of the patients are admitted to the hospital’s various departments.

The emergency department is also prepared for mass disaster scenarios of all types, and conducts training exercises in cooperation with other institutions such as the IDF’s Home Front Command and the Health Ministry’s state of emergency division.  During the Second Lebanon War, the emergency medicine department operated in a protected space for four weeks, treating 1,800 casualties.

The department features seven units: triage, general-internal medicine (diseases), trauma unit (accidents), orthopedics, pediatrics, gynecology, CPR and intensive care units.  Each of these units is run by specialists, skilled physicians and nurses in the specific unit’s field and is assisted by administrative staff, stretcher bearers and auxiliary personnel.

The staff consists of 8 physicians and 60 nurses.
